An East Oakland Odyssey
For the last three years, most of the staff at ASCEND has been engaged with doing inquiry around our practice. Liz Simons and Tom Malarky from the Bay Area Coalition for Equitable Schools (BayCES) have coached us in this work. It comprises the bulk of our professional development and informs many of the school-wide and classroom decisions we make about curriculum and instruction. In addition to participating in and leading inquiry at ASCEND, I have also been a part of two BayCES inquiry projects. These have connected me with a larger network of teachers doing inquiry and have furthered my research and writing skills. Continue reading

An East Oakland Odyssey
I was born and raised in London, England to a Jewish mother and a Costa Rican father who only ended up in the UK due to the political turmoil of the 1960s. It’s always been a challenge to answer the question, “Where are you from?” When Margaret Thatcher came to power, my mother relocated us to Orange County, California where her parents lived. Upon graduating from high school, I fled to the University of California at Santa Cruz where I finally found a community of like-minded folk. In 1991, I graduated with a BA in history and Latin American Studies. Continue reading
