About the Origins of This Work
Inside Teaching launched from the Quest Project for Signature
Pedagogies in Teacher Education, a two year initiative jointly funded
by the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund and by the Carnegie Foundation
for the Advancement of Teaching. The Goldman-Carnegie Quest Project’s
first phase sought to do more than create a collection of multimedia
web sites of K-12 classrooms for teacher educators to use. The plan was
to develop the ideas, expertise, and relationships that could make
records of K-12 professional practice that were true vehicles for the
improvement of teacher preparation. To learn how to develop materials
that would impact teacher preparation on a large scale, the Carnegie
Foundation’s Quest Team called upon the knowledge of teacher educators
who had successfully integrated such technology. These teacher
educators documented and made public their innovative integration of
multimedia records of teaching practice as alternative texts for
pre-service teacher education. The Quest Project grew out of work done
by Desiree Pointer Mace, Tom Hatch, and Toru Iiyoshi to invent and
create multimedia online records of teaching practice for the K-12
Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL),
which was led by Ann Lieberman and Tom Hatch from 1999-2003.
About the Development of This Web Site, “Inside Teaching”
As founding co-editors, Ann Lieberman and Desiree
Pointer Mace provided overall guidance in the design and development of
the living archive. Leslie Butler worked as the archive’s chief
architect in partnership with the Goldman-Carnegie Quest Project Working Team, the Carnegie Foundation’s Knowledge Media Lab,
and Research Assistant Carlos Castellanos. Cheryl Richardson headed up
our research agenda and the data collection on student learning, as
well as the work in the “Perspectives” section along with Rebecca Akin
and Matt Ellinger. Rebecca Akin, Matt Ellinger, Desiree Pointer Mace,
Leslie Butler, and Ruba Ahmed worked with teachers to develop the K-12
websites in the collections. A number of K-12 sites were developed by
Tom Hatch and his colleagues at NCREST. The teacher educator sites were created with support from the Quest Project and using the KEEP tools available at http://www.cfkeep.org. Emily Stewart provided the necessary administrative support for the successful completion and launch of the web site.
The site is now hosted by the Center to Support Excellence in Teaching at Stanford University.
