Reading and Language Arts for Elementary Classrooms

Course Overview

Students taking this course will have the opportunity to examine, apply, and critically assess theoretical perspectives and practices that pertain to the teaching of reading/language arts in the elementary and middle grades (k-8). The course draws upon various approaches to learning/teaching literacy. Topics include: theoretical perspective on the development of reading and writing; aspects of linguistics and how it relates to literacy learning; word study for phonics, vocabulary and spelling instruction; reading comprehension; various formats for supported and guided reading; assessment and its relationships to instruction; literature-based approaches to reading instruction; and process-based approaches to writing instruction.
